A Creative Muse is In This House

Ephemera Celebration

A Creative Muse Flew In...
from California and taught a class today at my favorite hang out called Ink About It. You can imagine how surprised I was to learn that Kelly Kilmer, one of the artists featured in the book IN THIS HOUSE was teaching a class in design today at the wonderful and delightful Ink About It. It was so wonderful to lose myself in a new creative adventure so closely after Christmas.

It really helps with the let down of Christmas busyness being over, to be able to jump into a new creative adventure.

When I opened up the book IN THIS HOUSE by Angela Cartwright and Sarah Fishburn I was so inspired. I had no idea that the same actress that I once watched on the TV show Lost In Space was now lost in the magical world of mixed media and photography like the rest of us. The book is a gorgeous collection of collage art from various artists all designing around the “house” theme. After reading this book I was so inspired, that I designed White Christmas Vintage house canvases for the next month for my sisters, mom and friend Judy.

Angela Cartwright has a lovely place on the Internet, where you can visit her blog, see a gallery of her artwork and revisit her many roles in the movies and television. Sarah Fishburn has a lovely place, and on her site she has a link to see the inside of the book she co-authored, IN THIS HOUSE.

Together they publish a magazine thru lulu called Pasticciou

Some of the designs that Kelly introduced were using different size papers and arranging them in various ways before pasting them into our journals.

Kelly had twenty-two of us in her class, and it was so much fun seeing how everyone decorated the pages of their journals. Here was my interpretation of one of Kelly's ideas.

What a wonderful evening of creating. Piles of all kinds of paper were scattered on the floor for us to select for our collage. Little vats of paste were available as we all proceeded to rip, cut and paste all kinds of paper designs into place. I brought my IN THIS HOUSE book for Kelly to autograph, and we all had so much fun. Her work starts on page 60 of this inspirational treasure.

I met some great women who share my love of mixed media. We swapped favorite haunts to find Ephemera and tips on our favorite papers and creations and how to organize inspiration. I love crafting, especially in a classroom setting. It brings back childhood memories of coloring, cutting out paper dolls and sharing the joy of creating with the girls.

Thank you Kelly, and thank you to the ladies of the INK ABOUT IT shop for hosting such a creative event.

The name of the song for this post is Somewhere Over The Rainbow. One of my favorite's and it reminds me of the ending of one of my favorite movies You've Got Mail.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas

My sister Lynne's gifts just came in the mail. Each gift is a work of art, so much so that I don't like unwrapping her gifts. I thought I would share this one with you and A Christmas blessing too.

A Christmas Prayer

Loving Father, help us to remember the birth
of Jesus, that we may share in the song of the angels,
the gladness of the shepherds,
and the worship of the wise men.
Close the door of hate and
open the door of love all over the world.
Let kindness come with every gift and
good desires with every greeting.
Deliver us from evil by the blessing
which Christ brings, and teach us to
be merry with clear hearts.
May the Christmas morning make us happy
to be Thy children, and the Christmas evening
bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts,
forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus' sake. Amen!

This rose pointsettia is from my mother, I put it in my kitchen so I can see the bright red color of Christmas as I cook Christmas dinner.

Twenty-five years ago on a snowy Christmas Eve, I wrote a Christmas story about a little boy named Benjamin. I called the story Benjamin and the Christmas Tree. I posted the story on My Children Stories place if you would like a new story to tell your children this Christmas. Five years after I wrote this story God blessed me with a baby daughter named Sarah Elizabeth and I am still writing children stories today.Benjamin's Favorite Ornaments

I have created a Christmas blog as my Christmas card to you, and My Devotional has a special story of The Christmas Gift. I hope that this Christmas brings you the love and blessing that God intended when He first sent His son Jesus as a gift to us.

Have a Lovely Day

I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas, and a wonderful holiday.

Merry Christmas,

Blessings, Karen

A Christmas Card Christmas

This time of year I always remember the different places that we have lived at Christmas time. I believe that one of my favorite Christmas memories is when we lived in Canada. We lived in a place called Oakville in Ontario and during the Christmas holidays it was so beautiful. Oakville is surrounded by Lake Ontario and the Lake Shore homes are right on the water. It is a glorious place and whether you are doing your Christmas shopping in the quaint little shops, participating in the Christmas festivities on Lakeshore Drive or just taking in the view, it is a perfect Christmas card. The Christmas holidays begin with the tree lighting ceremonies downtown and the horse-drawn carriage rides and special bus tours.

Our home was so cozy, very near the next-door-neighbor's houses, which helped make such a close-knit neighborhood. I remember such wonderful Christmas parties which everyone in the neighborhood attended. One year our neighbor actually hired the most gorgeous Santa to be at the party for the children.

We lived in a section of Oakville called Fairway Hills. The decorations on all the houses were spectacular and on Christmas Eve buses arrived touring our homes. Illuminators were dropped off early Christmas Eve for all of us to light and by evening our little village was completely aglow in the spirit of Christmas. We all met in the common area and sang Christmas carols together and the gift of Christmas was perfect for all of us. I found my neighbor Sharon on the Christmas caroling section of the web site for Fairway Hills. The photo of her is the top right corner and of course she is coordinating everything. She also helped put together the neighborhood picnic every year when we lived there. Sharon and Gordon are the best neighbors ever! Merry Christmas, Sharon I can't wait to see you and Gordon on your Christmas card.

The Christmas TreeI was so excited when I found the site for Fairway Hills, you can listen to them caroling and they have a special video of the Festival of Lights. If you look real close you might see our home there. Each year as you enter the neighborhood we collected money for the Salvation Army. I read on the site that 2006 they raised over eight thousand dollars. I love the generosity of the Canadian people!

I couldn't have asked for a lovelier Christmas card. The neighbors, the memories and the sights and smells of Christmas in Oakville will live in my heart forever. I love that my girls were young enough to take full advantage of the family-oriented atmosphere in Canada but old enough to have memorized the special times. Some day when they are adults they will cherish these memories like I do today.

Merry Christmas Oakville

Blessings, Karen

A Children's Christmas Story

Teaching my children life lessons has always been difficult because when I tried to tell them the lesson at hand they would say "awe Mom not again." Then they would roll their eyes and listen to the words as they seemed to fall to the floor, as they patiently waited until I was finished speaking. Finally when my oldest daughter Sarah was about ten and little Ashley was seven I learned to tell them stories instead. They are so bright and sometimes even before I finished the story they would laugh getting the message before I would explain what the meaning of the story might mean to them.

I thought since it's Christmas, I would share a story I wrote for them all about the magic of giving. Merry Christmas to all the little children, especially the child that lives within all of us.

AMANDA AND HER TWINKLING CHRISTMAS SLIPPERS
Amanda loved so many things, but most of all she loved shoes. Every time she received a gift it was a new pair of shoes, boots, sneakers or slippers. All of her uncles, aunts, grandparents and friends would send her gifts of shoes. Her mother would take her shopping for new shoes when school started or when she had a special party to attend.

Amanda had shoes in every style, color and design imaginable. She had loafers with pennies in the pockets, and running shoes with blue and white shoelaces. She had slippers for bedtime that were fuzzy with faces of puppies on the toes. Amanda had many pairs of party shoes fit for a princess. She had fancy shoes in patent leather. She had black ones, red ones, blue ones and white ones. She had purple shoes with blue bows on the straps. Her colorful sneakers were in every kind of design. Some of them even had flashing lights on the soles. She called her favorite fancy shoes her twinkling Christmas slippers. They were beautiful red slippers that glittered in the light. They had Christmas trees on the toes and little white presents with red ribbons and bows that danced around the shoes. They were trimmed in red satin ribbon and a green bow sat at the front of each slipper.

One day, Amanda’s mother said that they were going shopping in the city for Christmas presents. Once they were there, they stopped in all the fancy shops. When they were finished, they went to have lunch in a favorite restaurant. As they were walking towards the restaurant, Amanda noticed something special. There on the corner amongst all the shoppers, sat a lady with her little girl. They were wearing old tattered clothes and the mother was begging for money. The little girl was wearing shoes that were much too big for her small feet. Amanda’s heart ached for the little girl. Amanda’s mother stopped and gave the woman some money for her collection plate. She didn’t say a word to Amanda as she continued to walk toward the train station. Amanda noticed that tears had welled up in her mother’s eyes. She didn’t ask her mom why she was crying because she felt sad for them too.

Amanda and her mother returned home with their presents. As Amanda wrapped her gifts, she could not stop thinking about how many shoes that she had and how that little girl only had big ugly shoes to wear. Amanda went to her closet and took down the Christmas slippers off the shelf. She loved this pair the most and thought how the little girl might feel wearing these pretty shoes instead.

At breakfast the next morning Amanda asked her mother if she could give a Christmas present to the little girl that they had seen the day before. Amanda’s mother smiled, and told her that giving from your heart was the true meaning of Christmas. She agreed to take Amanda back into the city, so that she could give the little girl a Christmas present. Amanda wrapped the slippers in her best wrapping paper.

The next day they went back to the city and found the spot where they had been the first time that they had visited the city. The little girl glanced at Amanda and put her head down in shame. Amanda knelt down and placed the present in the little girl’s lap. The little girl looked down at the gift and then looked up at Amanda’s face and smiled. The little girl hugged the box as if it were her favorite stuffed animal. The mother of the little girl smiled warmly at Amanda and her mother. Again Amanda’s mother placed money in the woman’s collection plate.

All the way home, Amanda smiled. She felt so warm inside. Several days passed and Amanda’s mother arrived at her bedroom door and said “Amanda, I have a few more last minute errands to run in the city tomorrow, would you like to join me?” Amanda was thrilled “Oh yes Mommy”, she said.

That day it was a cold day and Amanda wore a red coat and green velvet hat and pants. Amanda had a furry scarf tied around her neck and pink mittens to keep her hands warm. She had her tall black boots on just in case it snowed. When they got into the city, they went to a big department store and bought Amanda’s father a blue tie. They stopped in many small shops and then had lunch in a fun restaurant. Seated at the counter, a real toy train carrying their food stopped right in front of them, letting them slide their plate off the little car. Just before they were to leave for home, Amanda asked if they could see the little girl one more time. Amanda’s mother was pleased to say yes.

They walked several blocks passed store windows decorated for Christmas. She could not wait to see her new friend. As they approached the corner, Amanda could see the little girl. She did not have her head down in shame today. There she sat alongside her mom wearing a great big smile. She clapped her shoes together so that the Christmas trees twinkled more brightly in the sun. She looked up at Amanda and the love shone back at her. Amanda thought that the shoes fit her perfectly and that they seemed to twinkle even more brightly than before.

Amanda’s Christmas was divine. There were lots of presents underneath the tree. Of course on Christmas morning she had received several pairs of new shoes. Aunt Kitty gave her a pair of fuzzy knee high boots to wear after skiing. Uncle Charlie gave her a pair of blue cowboy boots. Her mother and father bought her a lovely pair of white ice skates with pink laces and pompoms. Although Amanda was thrilled with the sight of all the presents, it was the pair that she could no longer wear that brought her the most joy that Christmas Day. Her heart felt so warm every time she remembered the little girl and her twinkling Christmas slippers.

Here are my cuties:

This Christmas they are sixteen and nineteen, and they don't let me tell them stories anymore, but someday when they have children, I'll be back to storytelling again.

They don't know it, but Santa is still leaving them a stuffed animal under the tree, only I bought them in Victoria Secret to make them feel more sophisticated!

Merry Christmas

One of my favorite things about Christmas is getting to bring out my Santa collection.

The Many Faces of SantaI love collecting Santas, especially the Vintage style. The biggest thrill was when I attended the collector's weekend at Vaillancourt Studios and got to paint this Santa. Vaillancourt Folk Art I will cherish him forever. Everyone in my family knows how much I love Santas so each year at Christmas my family and friends give me Santas to add to my collection.

Christmas in the kitchen

Christmas in the kitchen

I love having Christmas decorations in the kitchen. When I look over at my baker's rack and see the ornaments it makes me want to bake.

I learned a lovely trick for vases and punch bowls at Christmas. Fill the bowl with water, add fresh cranberries and they will hold up any fat candle. They don't have to be floaters. I tied a ribbon in and out of the edges of this one.

I discovered Susan Branch when I was living in Hong Kong. I was so homesick the year I found this wonderful Christmas cookbook. I have been a fan of hers every since. She has a wonderful web site by Susan Branch.

I love tea, and I love having my teacups stacked ready to use when I put the kettle on. My sister, Susan is creating her incredible Christmas tea blends again. I just love my sister's tea, she has been making her own blends since 1995.

Christmas in the kitchen, the kettle on for a cup of tea, browsing Susan Branch's cookbook for a new recipe and now all I need is a bit of snow.

Did I say a bit of snow?

Happy Birthday Susan

Dear Susan,

I hope you have the best birthday. I wish I was there, we could go have ice cream and cake together.

I was thinking about what we could do if wishes came true today. I think I would pick you and Lynne up and we would drive to the Hampton's and sit by the ocean with a picnic lunch and reminisce. We could sit by Cooper's Beach and watch the ocean and the sunset, listen to the local radio station , be alone together and just be sisters, to laugh about all the young days.

Then we could stay over night in some gorgeous little place and be totally pampered in the Hampton's sort of way. Then we would ride the Jitney into New York and take a class together at the Tinsel Trading Company. I would take you to that cute little Italian restaurant for lunch before we would have to say goodbye.

Susan, I cherished you from the day you were born, you have been my inspiration and my joy. You always make me laugh and create the most wonderful inspiration in life. I am so proud of you and I love you so much. I hope your day is filled with wonder and love.

Please stay to hear the whole song...it's happy like you are!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Love, Karen
