For the love of old book inspiration

If you are like me, you have old books that are just like old friends. Sitting on a shelf just waiting for you to reread. Characters you fell in love with long ago, just like old friends.

I love old books and while shopping for books to inspire some fabric collections, I have also acquired quite a few wonderful treasures, which are now in my book shop.

One of them is The Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes, published in 1938.

My daughter's boyfriend was kind enough to pose for a "It's elementary, my dear Watson" kind of photo.

Doesn't he make the perfect Sherlock?

There are lots of new goodies, and I have been busy designing some new children's fabrics using Antique artwork from the 1800's. I am always amazed at the integrity of the artwork I find inside. To me it's embracing the magic hidden inside these remarkable treasures.

Music is a bit like old friends too, so what better song to play than one from our old friends Simon and Garfunkel. The song is Old Friends.

Love Letter Inspiration

One day last year as crazy as it may sound, I took my Vintage typewriter and suitcase to the beach.

I used Kim Klassen's new Organic texture

It was so much fun and when I saw the photographs, it made me think of some summer long ago when perhaps a homesick lover might be inspired to write a love letter.

Today is Mosaic Monday, and Mary from Little Red House is surely going to inspire us with her dreamy photography. And there will be many more Mosaics for us to enjoy.

Inspirational People

Isn't this lovely? Judy Ginns makes these wonderful creations, and she used my fabric for the beautiful designs on this post. Squeal!!!!! Judy lives in Queensland and sells her designs at a beautiful little shop:

Footprints on the Beach, in Mooloolaba, Queensland.

I love the names in Australia, especially Queensland. They are so charming. Judy's creations don't often make it to the web site, because they are sold right away. I am not surprised.

I met Judy when she first purchased some of my fabric.

Then, she was so kind to send me photographs of her creations. You might remember the post I wrote a while back, called Little Girl Inspiration.

Now she has sent me these photographs, and I am thrilled at what she creates using my fabric.

sigh. this one and the Little Ballerina were printed in Cotton Voile.

Just look what she did with my Alice in Wonderland fabric.

Judy inspires me. I printed these photographs out and put them on my inspiration board.

I just sent Judy another parcel of fabric, and I can't wait to see what she creates with these. Now I am so inspired that I am on a whirlwind creative spree. I am working on some new little girl designs because of her inspiration.

Another inspirational person is Anita from Castles, Crowns and Cottages. She creates these lovely heart sticks and sells them on her etsy shop. Well, Anita's package arrived dressed in pretty tissue paper and with some lovely tags. I was inspired to create a Valentine's arrangement with her embellished heart stick, and I put it next to her Valentine.

Last year Anita sent me the little Valentine with the girl holding a heart stick, which I fell madly in love with. I thought she should really have an etsy shop. And now she does, it's called Castles, Crowns and Cottages. Anita inspired my fabric which I call Anita's Harp inspiration.

So stop by and see her lovely creations. Just like Judy, she barely puts her creations up for sale when they are immediately sold.

Cath Kidston and French Script Inspiration

I'm in heaven when I am creating treasuries on etsy. I designed two recently.

Thanks to the lovely Elyse from Tinkered Treasures, I was introduced to Cath Kidston designs. The name of the treasury is Cath Kidston Inspiration of course.

Sometimes when I glance at the items I have added to my favorites on etsy, they look so pretty together that a treasury is needed to share. I call this one Favorites from French Script.

I added a little Ginger Rogers inspiration for this short post. I'll be back later tonight with my Pink Saturday post. Happy Friday

Story eDition Inspiration

Texture Tuesday's theme this week is the Story eDition. Kim Klassen's Cafe blog has many beautiful photographs to share.

One day after visiting the dentist in Boston, I was feeling quite discouraged. I had learned that the amount of dental work that I needed to have done was overwhelming. Yes, I was deep in self-pity that day.

On my way home, I passed by Boston Common. I saw a parking spot right in front of the building where they filmed the television show Cheers. So, I parked my car, grabbed my camera and decided to treat myself to take some photos and enjoy the park.

As I walked through this magnificent park and watched the swan boats, I came across the most amazing sight. A beautiful swan sitting on her nest.

The scene took my breath away, and more importantly it changed my story.

Suddenly I became aware of all the beauty that surrounded me.

When I left the park, I no longer was lost in self-pity, but the joy of such beauty all around me. So my submission for the STORY eDITION is my Once upon a time Swan.

I used Kim's Sweet Treat texture and KK primmed texture for my photo.

Perhaps we can all walk in glimpses of Once Upon A Time feelings, when we choose to get lost in the beauty that surround us.

Art Deco Inspiration

I love entering the weekly fabric contest on Spoonflower. I especially love it lately because I have been challenging myself by using my own artwork and working on my surface design skills.

I took an original portrait design and used it in the ART DECO theme contest.

The contest required us to only use four colors, so this is the design colors that I chose for my submission.

I have always loved the Art Deco period and especially those magnificent Vogue magazines. the 1920's was an amazing Fashion design era. After all this was the era of Coco Chanel.

Coco Chanel said:

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."

I think that this is especially true of the Art Deco period. The art, music and fashion was so amazing. One of the reasons that I love the movie, Midnight in Paris is that I can so identify with the character played by Owen Wilson. Truly the people he met were among my favorite authors, writers and performers.

The above design is the one I submitted. She is called ART DECO MAGAZINE 1923. I actually ended up creating so many different versions because it was so much fun. But this one and the full color version, which I called ART DECO FASION MAGAZINE, I put into my fabric gallery.

This contest will run the first week of February. I just designed something for next week's contest, which is Grafitti/Street Art eDition.

More Valentine Inspiration

You know what I love about Valentine's Day? Besides the candy and flowers of course.

I have a Valentine that I designed for you, using my French stamp fabric, my own Eiffel Tower design and my Dove stamp. The brushes that I used on my Eiffel Tower were free from French Kiss Textures.

I have a question for you. For a long time now I wanted to use a service that would download files that I could giveaway.

The service I found is the one Kim Klassen uses. Every week when I receive her textures, I think "I should be doing this with my artwork."

My question for you is, would you like a monthly download from me?

I would be creating one-of-a-kind designs that you could use. You could also use them to include in the creations that you make for sale. on your web sites, blogs etc.

It would be absolutely FREE. I thought it would be a nice way to let you know how much I love you. Please leave a comment and let me know.

What I would do is put a subscription sign-up on my blog and you would just give me your e-mail address. My plan would be to start out monthly and hopefully do this weekly.

Designing is my favorite thing to do. Over the years I have designed so many graphics. It seems silly to just have them hanging out on my computer, when someone might be able to use them.

Valentine Inspiration

ell, if you are like me, you have a stash of old magazines that you pull out for seasonal inspiration.

As for me, my stash of Home Companion Magazine is one of my favorites. Romantic Homes is also lovely Valentine inspiration.

I created an inspiration board for you on Pinterest for Valentine Inspiration. I called the board Valentine's Day. Don't you just love Pinterest?

Oh, and thanks to my friend Snap at Tales from Twisty Lane, I learned that Natasha from Five Minutes Just for Me, has created a weekly Pinterest Party called PINNING AND SINGING.

My Valentine inspiration began really, when I received my Willard Newsletter from Susan Branch. If you don't already receive it, you can stop by her blog and sign up for Willard. She has the cutest Valentine surprises in her shop.

ell, I have been painting little Valentine vignettes ever since I read her newsletter.

I found some dreamy Valentine's Day Brunch inspiration on a blog called Zsa Zsa Bellagio.

Sting, sigh...I love everything that he sings, but this song is the dreamiest. Perfectly romantic for a Valentine inspiration.

Inspirations found on a Brisk Winter's Day

I have been trying to get rid of the remains of a bad cold.

Yesterday I took a walk in a park in Wellesley. I thought the fresh air would help.

The day actually felt more like a brisk Spring day than it did a Winter's one.

As I walked and admired the golden colors of a New England winter, I thought about some wonderful writings.

This book I found years ago, it's one of my favorites. A journal of nature walks in New England.

A Walk Through The Year, by Edwin Way Teale.

"January 23. With three -quarters of this first month of the year gone by, this is still a January without a January thaw. The thermometer stands only a few degrees above zero when Nellie and I begin our "moon walk" about nine o'clock this evening. In this still lustrous night we half expect to see an owl from the edge of the dark woods where the open snow begins."

I don't know why but I love reading memoirs, and walking side by side with the characters, seeing what they saw with no other guide except the descriptions I find through their words.

I thought about how stark everything looked and the chill in the air reminded me of my favorite chapter in The Shell Seekers by Rosemond Pilcher.

The chapter when she invites the gardener in for a hot supper on a cold Spring day.

I thought about Mary Lenox in The Secret Garden asking for a bit of earth to tend in early Spring.

Things that I found to photograph seemed a perfect illustration for the story.

I found so much peace on my walk, and when I returned my head felt much better...I could breath.

It was also nice to sit, enjoy the warmth of the house and sip my tea.

I pulled some favorite reads off the book shelf. It was nice to revisit favorite words describing walks in New England. Reminding me how blessed it is to memorize the simple things, like a walk outdoors on a brisk Winter's day.

Meet me at the beach

I have been enjoying playing around with Kim Klassen's textures. These were taken from her Ultimate collection.

I took this photograph in Sandwich, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. There is a place where the long boardwalk borders the golden grasses, provoking daydreams.

The ocean is just beyond the gate, keep climbing.

I thought it might be a lovely reason to join Mary from Little Red House for Mosaic Monday. So, please stop by and see all the lovely mosaics.

Getting Comfort Inspiration

Now I know why I was lacking ambition to begin the New Year. It started on Friday. I am not sure if it the flu or a bad cold. It's just that feverish, achy feeling, with a stuffed nose and a bit of cough. The feelings that makes me want to snuggle in bed watching Winnie-the-pooh episodes with a cup of tea and with a coloring book and crayons.

What is it when I get sick? No matter how old I am...I get comfort from those comfy cozy things that I remember from my youth. At the moment I feel like the heffalumps and woozles are dancing in my head.

Prescription to myself:

Get comfy cozy in bed with lots of pillows
Drink a hot cup of tea
Browse a stack of inspirational books
Watch a few Winnie-the-Pooh episodes
Get plenty of rest
Drink lots of fluids
Make a list of my Blessings

While I am nursing this stuffy head, I thought I would share some CUTENESS inspiration. We can all do with a cup of CUTENESS from time to time.

This week's fabric challenge on Spoonflower Fabrics is for us to come up with a design including a recipe for the contest.

As I mentioned on yesterday's post, I had a long "To Do List'. I did get to take down the tree and put the ornaments away. And I did get to design this week's fabric.

For the Recipe part, I chose my favorite tea cookie recipe, and I added my favorite teapot,

My bluebird was happy to sit still while I added a few butterflies.

In-Between Christmas and New Year's

Christmas was wonderful. and I hope that your Holiday was too. I have been in some kind of dreamy state this week.

I have been looking at my blog with the same feeling that I get when I look at my Christmas tree. They both need attention.

I can't seem to find the energy to do either one.

This week I am somewhere in-between memorizing this Christmas, and getting ready for the New Year. 2012 Yikes!

I haven't been able to muster a bit of energy to take down the tree, or write a new post until today.

So, I am popping in to say hi and to wish you a Happy New Year. I will be taking down my tree today, and thinking about taking down my Christmassy embellishments from my blog.

I feel like I am slowly getting my ambition back to tackle my "To Do List".

So until then, I will pour myself another cup of coffee and take down the ornaments from our Christmas tree and put them all away.

Wishing you an inspirational day. I love Ben Taylor, and I love the way he sings I Will.

I will tackle my "To Do List", I will not eat another Christmas cookie, I will fix up my blog and visit everyone, I will answer all my e-mails, I will make those phone calls, I will get to my paperwork, I will take down all the Christmas listings on etsy, I will get excited about beginning another year, I will design new fabric for the weekly contest, I will take some photos for texture tuesday, I will find some pink for Pink Saturday, I will put all the Christmas decorations away nice and neatly, I will take down the Christmas lights outside before it snows, I will come out of this trance, I will stop daydreaming! But I will take some time today to Thank God for a beautiful Christmas, and think of all the nice blessings around me today, like you..before the new year begins.

A White Christmas

Snow. I heard the weatherman say that we might be getting snow on Christmas day. Now don't pack your bags just yet.

Maybe we'll get just some pretty white stuff dusting everything. I don't feel quite ready for one of those New England Blizzards just yet.

There have been years when we couldn't even walk through to the Gazebo.

Why Samantha and Cocoa could hardly walk through the snow last year.

So, just a dusting please.

I'm so excited.....

I have always been in love with texture and patterns.

I especially love to mix them together. My sister Lynne has introduced me to the world of quilting.

When I left Hong Kong, my friend Elizabeth gave me this gorgeous teapot. It is my most cherished possession. Filled with memories of a wonderful chapter in my life.

The teapot has two spouts. Inside there are two separate pots, one for hot water and one for tea.

Several years ago I painted an oil painting for my mother of the teapot and I added a little bluejay.

On a recent trip to my mom's, I was staring at a gorgeous quilt that Lynne had made for my mother. I glanced over at the painting and had a whirlwind of inspiration.

When I got home I designed over thirty different coordinating designs using the same colors. My fabric collection is called Mom's Bluebird and Teapot Collection

I am still trying to find a great way to photograph these designs for my shop.

When my fabric arrived yesterday, I was so excited that I had to share it with you today.

Never in a million years did I believe that I would someday be able to convert my paintings into fabric. More importantly, that I would be able to pour out my heart into my designs.

When I lived in Hong Kong I fell in love with Canto Pop music. This song is sung by Vivan Chow and it is called Prettiest Tears. Prettiest tears makes me think of the heartfelt memories of that chapter which are captured in these designs.

Christmas in my kitchen Inspiration

My mother has always been all about helping the poor during the holidays.

She has told us stories of the Great Depression, and how they would go to bed hungry many nights. This has always motivated her to give to the less fortunate.

Last Friday my mother was interviewed by WPTZ in Burlington Vermont.

She lives in a lovely retirement complex called The Pines.

Every year my mom organizes and collects the food for the food bank.

She has been doing this for thirteen years.

I thought I would share the link to her interview for you to see. click HERE. The segment is called Vermont Senior Puts Dent in Hunger. We sat together and watched the 6 o'clock news together, and saw her interview air. We made a memory

My Dad would be proud of my mom. He was one of the first cameramen for CBS and we went to many television shows together. My dad was the cameraman for shows like Ed Sullivan, Carol Burnett, Gary Moore, Jimmy Dean, Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett at Carnegie Hall, and many many more.

Speaking of memories, I always feel sorry for the Christmas ornaments that don't make it onto the tree.

So, this year I put some of my favorites in a glass jar and sat it on my kitchen counter to bring some Christmas memories in where I bake.

Recipe for a Holly, Cranberry Candle.

Sprigs of Holly
Fresh Cranberries,
Tea Light Candle

Take a glass vase, fill it with water, add sprigs of Holly, then add a bit of fresh cranberries. Tuck a candle inside the cranberries and enjoy. I like using cranberry scented candles. The cranberries and holly hold the candle firmly in place.

The Gift of Giving Inspiration

It was my Birthday on Friday, and my kids and husband had some special plans, which could happen over the next few days. So, I would get to be with each of them.

I asked if I could drive up to be with my mother for my Birthday, and drive back on Saturday. They all agreed it was a good thing to do. I love the drive there.

Driving along, listening to Christmas music I was thinking about what I might design for this week's fabric theme on Spoonflower.

Going up to Vermont to see my mom, I stopped on the way at a shop to buy her some ribbon candy.

As I walked towards the shop, I heard a familiar sound. The sound of a ringing bell, and I saw a woman standing alongside a collection stand.

I always admire these volunteers who stand out in the freezing cold, usually wearing Santa hats and a smile, inviting us to come and leave a donation for the poor.

As I got closer to put some money into the red bucket, I asked if the woman was cold. She said "Yes, it is cold tonight, but I do this every year. You see, this charity helped me and my children when they were younger. When I get home, I feel warm because my heart is warm".

I got my mom some ribbon candy and got back into the car. As I drove away, I knew just what to design for next week's theme.

This fabric is called A Bell for Giving. The little girl represents the childlike heart of giving I saw in that woman's spirit. I have designed a few fabric designs to coordinate with this one. The collection is called The Gift of Giving.

The wonderful season of Christmas rings in the spirit of giving. A lovely reason to listen to the Carol of Bells.

Christmas Tree Inspiration

As I had mentioned on my last post about Christmas Tree inspiration. This year the Concord Museum is celebrating the 16th Annual Family Trees. A Celebration of Children's Literature. It will be held until January 1, 2012.

When I saw this charming Alice tree, I fell in love. Each ornament was made to feel as though the characters from the book by Helen Oxenbury had hopped onto the tree.

Here is a photo of the illustrator in her studio. I found such an enchanting interview. I could listen to this amazing illustrator forever.

The families of Concord decorated all of the trees in the museum. I think this was one of my favorites.

Although, there are so many Christmas Tree Inspirations at the museum, each storybook is enchanting.

Speaking of inspiration, I love to listen to the Carpenter's at Christmastime. Like Sleigh Ride.

Celebration Inspiration

It's that time of year when we all celebrate the Holidays.

I can't wait to go to Vermont to see my Mom and be around the mountains, the snow and Vermont charm.

Kim Klassen is celebrating something new today. It's the Celebrate eDition for Texture Tuesday.

I have used her new texture called kk lookup, on all of my photos today. I also used some lovely brushes of Kim's, some Whimsical, some Affirmation ones.

When I think of my favorite music about celebration, I think of Kenny Loggins singing Celebrate me home.

The Snow Queen Inspiration

Christmas in Concord, Massachusetts is lovely.
This year the Concord Museum is celebrating the 16th Annual Family Trees. A Celebration of Children's Literature. It will be held until January 1, 2012.

A lovely Snow Queen Christmas tree

Each tree is decorated as the theme to celebrate a Children's book.

This one is a celebration of The Snow Queen. The book retells the classic story by Hans Christian Anderson. The illustrations are amazing and created by Miss Clara. The story is retold by Sarah Lowes.

This year the main sponsor for the Family Trees, is one of my favorite book shops for Children's books, BAREFOOT BOOKS.
They have an amazing on-line shop too. I love their podcasts of storytelling for the little ones.

The decorations are each made by hand.

I just got my first Christmas card in the mail.....it's official.

Christmastime is here again,

I passed by the nurseries with Christmas trees all in a row.

My daughter and her boyfriend are putting up the lights outside today.

I'll be decorating the house beginning this weekend.

iPhone Inspiration

Sitting on the stool next to me in the Apple store was a woman in her mid to late 80's.

She was so tiny that I couldn't believe that she could actually climb up onto the stool. Suddenly her genius arrived, clad in the familiar red shirt, wearing an iPhone necklace. He sat down next to her and greeted her by name.

He patiently reviewed what they had learned the last time she had met with him. She was learning how to use an iMac. It was clear that this was a new experience for her, but she was determined to learn.

Wow. I want to be just like that woman, always getting out of my comfort zone and stretching to learn the next thing.

I too was given the opportunity to sit at an iMac while I waited for my red-shirted genius to arrive. I was able to get all of my work done and enjoy the view.

About thirty red-shirted Apple geniuses suddenly appeared, as we all had arrived promptly for our "genius bar" appointments. It was like being in a geeky version of that scene from Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, when the Oompa Loompa's arrive.

Earlier that morning I was feeling discouraged by my lack of knowledge about surface design. Why you ask? Well, I tried a new kind of design from my normal fabric design style. I entered the weekly contest on Spoonflower and ended up only positioning 37 out of 41.

I felt like I did when I reviewed the SAT scores for my English position in the High School hallway. I love fabric design, but I have reached that "failure place" in the cycle of the creative process.

Luckily, I am familiar with the feeling, because being an artist, not only do you often fail, but it is actually the place where you land just before the breakthrough. "Back to the drawing board", or as Fred and Ginger are singing "Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again!"

That woman sitting next to me not only got me out of the funk, but clearly pointed me in the right direction. The ending to my Apple store adventure was,

Oh, and my breakthrough. I need to get out of my comfort zone, take a class, research surface design and learn the proper way to create an interesting seamless repeat. I want to improve my skills and be able to add plaids, polka dots and Pazazz to my designs.

My Grandmother would approve. In essence, I have to "Pick myself up, dust myself off and start all over again!"

Pizazz
1. energy, vigor, vitality, spirit, etc.
2. smartness, style, flair, etc.

I wonder how I would have scored on my English SAT's if Google had been around in those days.

The remains of the day inspiration

Well, Thanksgiving was pretty nice.

I had to make two different Thanksgiving dinners for my daughters and their beaus who were arriving on different days.

In between I drove to Vermont to visit my mom, she is amazing at 85.

When I got back we had a bit of a flood in our kitchen.

No worries I just need to purchase a new faucet. I just wish it hadn't happened as I was trying to serve the second Thanksgiving dinner. Oh, who needs running water anyway?

I sat down with a cup of tea and reflected on the many dinners I have prepared for Thanksgiving over the years.

There were those chapters when I changed diapers in between basting my turkey.

Thanksgivings that arrived in foreign lands which required lots of creativity.

There were those Thanksgivings when I wore a size 5

and then the later ones, hmmmm I won't say but I wear a larger size now.

I'll just mention that during Change of life, the kitchen did seem hotter while making Thanksgiving dinner. And I was a bit more frazzled when the gravy didn't come out.

Then a few chapters later, there were those times when I worried about empty nest and sobbed my way through making the gravy.

God I had a big head!

Only to learn that they never truly leave, they just come back as different people.

Now, my life has changed but it's funny how we can adjust.

Hidden joys can be found in any chapter really.

I know that things don't always stay the same.

The only thing that doesn't change is the turkey, and like the song says "I still believe in love"

Now I look forward to more memory-making next Thanksgiving.

Dear Santa Inspiration

When Spoonflower Fabrics announced that the contest for this week was to design an Advent Calendar kit, I knew just what I wanted to do.

I thought it would be nice to use Dear Santa letters as the little softie that would fit into each pocket. Of course I would have one letter from a little boy and one from a little girl.

The pockets are little Dear Santa letters and marked with each day in December instead of numbers. The last letter says MERRY CHRISTMAS.

I found the perfect quote from Norman Vincent Peale:

And I added my watercolor painting of the Christmas tree for a storybook I wrote for my girls when they were little. Then I took the children from Fairy Lake design and combined them to create the actual design:

This is a sample of what it might look like on the first day of December with one letter in the pocket.

The most difficult part of the design was to include not only twenty-four pockets and letters, the actual hanging calendar, but to include the sewing directions. All on one yard of Quilting Cotton Fabric.

I thought it might be easer to use fusible web for the little softie letters than to sew each one.

I designed the yard to hold the hanging calendar on one side of the yard and the cut-out letters and pockets on the other side. I put the instructions, as part of the challenge on the bottom righthand side of the design. I ordered one to make up and share with you.

Here is the final design printed on one yard of fabric measuring 42" x 36 inches on a Quilting Cotton fabric. It is called Dear Santa Advent Calendar. I included it in my Christmas fabric collection. Once I receive my fabric kit I'll create the calendar for you to see.

Library Inspiration

When I went to the library to do a little research for a "Little Women project, I found inspiration.

No matter how many times I visit Concord's library, I get that same thrill that I had when I fist discovered this treasure.

What's it like to be in the historical library in Concord, Massachusetts?

Once you open the doors to the Concord library, you know at once that you are in a special place. Located in Concord, Massachusetts, this library is one of my favorites.

A large living room-like space greets you. Comfy couches and chairs circle coffee tables lined with stacks of books marked with notes. Staff favorites, Concord favorites, Concord authors.

As your eye travels to the ceiling, you see a narrow balcony that trims the room. With books that continue to the ceiling, that balcony makes you want to stay forever exploring.

Beautiful artwork is hung on the walls, and a large reading room off the main entrance takes your breath away. Beautiful large tables holding lovely lamps line the room. Above, there are lit chandeliers adding just the right amount of charm to your study experience.

Rooms and rooms of old beautiful woodwork, and tall ceilings. Bookcases from floor to ceiling with collections such as, Emerson, Thoreau, Bronson Alcott, Margaret Fuller, and Louisa May Alcott to mention a few. Their special collections have grown into quite an elaborate resource.

Tucked into locked cupboards, looking so perfect, books all lined up showing off their beautiful leather and gold leaf bindings.

Sitting amongst amzazing little volumes, reading the words of such great writers, philosophers and poets, Concord's library is pure inspiration.

Wing chairs are tucked into cozy corners, arranged nearby bookcases, with just the right amount of light to read comfortably. Tall chairs, covered in tapestry reminiscent of toile from the turn of the century invite you to sit and spend hours enjoying this special experience.

I asked at the front desk, how to have access to Louisa May Alcott's cupboard. She said that you have to go downstairs and meet the curator. "You will find a door at the end of the hall, and you will simply ring the bell and she will let you in." Just that explanation was charming enough, not to mention the thought of having access to a cupboard of Louisa May Alcott Antique books.

What's it like being inside Concord's library ... it's like touching American History.

I am doing some research on Louisa May Alcott for a new fabric collection I call Little Women. Spending time in this amazing place will surely be a joy and inspiration.

And then there is always Christmas at Orchard House. I found the soundtrack for the movie Little Women. Another inspiration for this holiday season revisiting the movie Little Women.

Lavender Inspiration

I was daydreaming yesterday, as I read Blondie's Journal.

Jane has this amazing way of writing that takes you right into her world.

Whether she is at her lake house, going on trips with her husband or just creating pretty places in her home,

Jane's writing makes you feel good. I was reading her post, Lavender and Hydrangeas Love.

I wanted to write something today for Texture Tuesday. Kim Klassen asked that this week we include one layer of her recent new texture called Phoebe.

The Phoebe eDition

Lavender seemed like a good topic to texturize. So, I used Kim's Phoebe texture on all of my photos, and a few of her wonderful stitched and Touch of Whimsey brushes.

I remembered when I first discovered the Cape Cod Lavender Farm. So I had plenty of Lavender photographs to work with.

Tinkered Treasure Inspiration

I have always loved magazines.

Years ago I never dreamed that someday when I read one that I would know the author of the article I was reading.

Thanks to blogging, I have met the most amazing gifted writers, artists, crafters, photographers and decorators.

Elyse Elizabeth Major is blessed with all of these gifts.

I first discovered Elyse from Tinkered Treasures two years ago when I fell in love with the frames that she was designing and selling on her etsy shop.

I asked her if I could use one of her beautiful frames on a print I wanted to sell in my shop. She was so gracious and I was able to create with Elyse's tinkered inspiration. Her Shabby Chic, cottage style made me realize I had found a kindred spirit.

Tinkered treasures is currently on vacation, but stay tuned.

Thanks to Elyse, it became a collaborated Creation between two etsians. I never knew that it would mark the beginning of a wonderful blogging adventure over at her Cottage.

Over the years, she has introduced me to designers like Cath Kidson, wonderful creative ideas for my home, and interesting and amazing places to visit in New England.

Elyse has also introduced me great make it crafts, and new magazines where you can find articles written by her. Her style has opened doors for her to be published in many magazines. And her press reveals many places where you can find Eylse today.

So, it was such a lovely surprise when I opened up the pages of the current Artful Blogging magazine and found Elyse.

She has written such a beautiful and heartfelt article in Stampington & Company's Artful Blogging magazine. The article is KEEPERS OF MEMORY, our blogs and treasured friends.

Romantic Victorian Inspiration

I have been having fun taking my watercolor paintings and turning them into fabric designs. I call this one French Script, Butterflies and Roses.

A customer asked me to design the repeat so that she could create crib shoes.

I created a small repeat design with a Blush border.

One Beginnings and Borders, which measures 7 x 6 inches in a repeat.

The other design is called French Script Butterflies and Roses small. It measures 5.26 inches by 4.50 inches in a repeat.

I am going to use this larger one printed on Quilting Cotton fabric for a pillow.

Of course, it's always a good idea to have an inspiration board to go with the designs.

SAMPLE BOARD

My watercolor painting was one of my first paintings, which I created while I was pregnant with my first daughter in 1988.

The original hangs in my in-laws home. The little one is a print of the original.

Spoonflower will be having another contest. The next contest will be tea towels created for 2012.

I created this one to be reminiscent of those old Victorian Valentine's.

As you can see, I used my French Script, Butterflies and Roses to create the design.

This design has been submitted for the contest. I call it A VICTORIAN TEA TOWEL CALENDAR.

Oh my stars, lots of inspiration for today.

I have a stack of projects that I am working on right now. Yet, there is always room for more inspiration.

Sewing scarves, and designing Christmas ornaments. Bee in My Bonnet surely stole my heart.

Stamping, stamping, stamping ribbons for Christmas. A Little Sweetness is filled with inspirations.

In between I have been reading stacks of books on fabric, patterns and quilting. I discovered Nana Company in the fabric neighborhoods of the Land of Blog.

No project is ever too big to tackle, when you do a little bit at a time.

I found an amazing photographer in the magazine Mollie Makes. I thought you would love her too. I have two of her books and they are filled with dreams.

Her name is Pia Jane Bijkerk. I just received her book Paris Made By Hand.

This book is surely going to steal your heart. You can read all about her and her amazing work on her blog.

In it she photographs wonderful shops in Paris. I have her book on Amsterdam too. Her latest book is called My Heart Wanders. Her photography is gorgeous.

Kim Klassen is writing about dreams on her post. I took away dreamy thoughts, a new texture, a how-to video, and a new song.

This week's Texture Tuesday's theme is The Number Two eDition. I used Kim's Life is Good texture. Several layers of soft light and played with the Gradient Map to adjust the shading a bit.

Ornament kit Inspiration

What can you do with a Babushka ornament?

Why you can use them to tie back your curtains.

Hang one from your favorite cupboard or armoire.

Of course Babushkas do love to hang from Christmas trees, and pal around with your favorite ornaments.

I have known Babushka ornaments to enjoy sitting on top of a hat box, or adorning a special gift.

Babushka ornaments are very pretty in a little girl's room, nursery or a Shabby Chic abode.

This is a one-of-a-kind design by me. Created with a touch of French Script to coordinate with one of my French Script fabric designs.

Inside the kit you will find a ready to cut and sew fabric, a bit of stuffing and a ribbon embellishment.

There are little cut-out designs for you to use as embellishments. I used mine to cover my stitches on the back like a little papoose.

All that you need is thread and a needle,

and you can enjoy your Babushka hanging ornament.

Snow, Snow, Snow

When the weather man said that we were expecting a Nor'easter, I didn't really believe it.

Then it arrived.

Many people are still without power. This is what the yard looked like in previous years of snow photos.

This is what it looks like now. We lost that tree on the left, when three birch trees toppled over too.

Fall used to be so pretty.

That tree on the left is gone, the birches fell on top of it. I loved that tree.

The trees that were covered in Fall leaves just couldn't hold up when the winds came. This one is very old and used to have the most glorious white blossoms in Spring.

We are safe and we have power. Many people are without power, and school is closed. Halloween trick or treaters might not be coming around today.

These used to be trees. I keep telling myself that now I can see the sunset better.

Lots of cleanup on this Halloween.

They are only trees, and so many people have had it much worse. It's just like life sometimes...we have to embrace what we have today, because tomorrow all that we might have are the memories.

I need to dwell on happy things today, so I chose this wonderful version of Paul's song I Will. It is sung by Ben Taylor, son of Carly Simon and James Taylor.

A Meditation Inspiration

Meditation

The door to meditation can be found in a quiet place,

It can be found inside a sanctuary.

Often it can be heard in the lyrics of a song.

or in the sound of a babbling brook.

Nature holds the secret door open to meditation,

whether we walk through adversity,

or when we are walking in thanksgiving.

Some days we can find God reflected in everything around us.

Other days we need to search God's Word and pray for God's Grace.

The door to meditation can be found in many places.

When I meditate and go home for a while, I always come away comforted or happy.

I had the hardest time finding just the right music for this post. All the songs I found were so sad.

I never feel sad after spending time with the Lord.

This music expresses how I feel after I have spent time alone with God.

May your day be filled with His presence and His Grace.

An Asian Inspiration

Once upon a time we lived in Hong Kong.

A piece of my heart still lives in the memories of the people and the places we loved during that chapter of our lives.

Our home was in the mountains and faced the Tai Tam Reservoir in the steep hills of Tai Tam.

One day as I was walking along the reservoir, coming towards me were about twenty Chinese Grandmas.

They were climbing up the steep hill, and I watched this beautiful moment unfold.

Each one was wearing the customary pajama style outfits in vivid colors and brilliant patterns.

They each carried a colorful umbrella to shield them from the sun.

I stopped in my tracks as I watched this beautiful scene. I had no camera with me. So, I had to use my ability to memorize the moment. I can still see that scene, as if it were yesterday.

Years later I sat down and painted two large paintings in watercolor. I used Asian papers to recreate the vivid patterns. I had them framed. I still have one in my home, and the other one I gave to my best friend Judy.

The name of this fabric is called Chinese Grandmas on French Script, and is available for sale on my Spoonflower Shop.

Hong Kong was known for it's beautiful scarves. I dreamed of being able to create this scene in a scarf.

When I saw that Spoonflower was offering a Cotton Silk fabric, I was able to make another dream come true.

I also have another Chinese Grandma fabric design, and you can see it by clicking on this image.

My dream of making a silk scarf using my Chinese Grandma design came true.

I reworked the design into two panels on French Script. It can be used as one large piece of fabric or cut intotwo panels.

I am in the process of making a scarf, which I will share soon.

Now I can't wait to see other designs printed on this lovely fabric.

The music for this post is the traditional Chinese music. The music seemed so romantic to me then, and I truly was in love.

It seems there is a bit of BWA HA HA inspiration fun in the Land of Blog.

Minute Man Trail Inspiration

My friend Amisha from Gorgeous and Fun Things, invited me to go for a walk

down the Minute Man Trail, In Lexington, Massachusetts.

This time of year it's such a pretty place here in New England.

I love American History and walking along the sights of Minute Man National Historical Park.

Along the way we stopped at historical homes,

and got a glimpse into the way things looked in the past.

We were able to visit with people dressed in period costume.

teaching us all about customs

and foods of the period.

We were even serenaded by a man in one of the historical homes playing the Harpsichord.

I found some Harpsichord music to serenade you and bring you back in time.

So, please stoke that fire...

because there's a chill in the air,

it's sweater weather, and a lovely day for a walk in New England.

Sweet Roses Inspiration

Color Inspiration

This time of year, it is hard not to be inspired by all the colors of Autumn.

I typically gravitate towards a pastel pallet. Lately I have been reminded of how nature affects patterns and the colors that we choose.

When I am taking my camera along to photograph Autumn's beauty, I secretly am memorizing the colors.

and the shapes I see highlighted by the lighting.

I enjoy creating an inspiration board of favorite fabrics, ribbons and shapes, which begins the design process for me.

Sometimes flipping through a swatch book of fabric can also be a good starting point.

It's such a short season, yet so rich in colors, I thought I would memorize them for my inspiration files. You never know when wintery days might need a bit of color to inspire you.

The song for this post is called Falling Leaves. If you listen you might see the leaves blowing in the wind in your imagination. This music brings me back to memories of the swoosh of Fall leaves.

I love a Vintage runway filled with fashion that are reminiscent of old movies and all that glamour and style.

The Little Black Dress fabric is available on my etsy shop called FrenchScript.

It is also in my Spoonflower Shop.

I designed this Little Black Dress fabric to be a bit of nostalgia. It is one of the designs in my Vintage Runway collection.

An Audrey Hepburn inspiration, bringing back memories of my favorite movie, Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Pink Babushka Inspiration

I know, I know first comes Halloween, then Thanksgiving and finally Christmas.

But I wanted to create some kits for crafters, giving them enough time to make them for Christmas.

I designed this Babushka hanging ornament for an upcoming contest on Spoonflower next week. We were asked to fit it on an 8" square swatch and include directions.

Then I used the same pattern to create a Santa design.

There are two designs for each one. A swatch to create one ornament, that square measures 8 x 8 inches. I also designed the Santa and the Babushka Doll designs to create nine 12 x 12" squares fitting on One Yard of Quilting Cotton Fabric. Each square houses the hanging ornament cut-out pattern.

I want to make kits using these two and a few others that I am designing.

It would be nice to make nine stuffed hanging ornaments for a Christmas tree or banner. I just ordered some sample swatches.

When they arrive I'll make samples to make sure my directions work.

New Photos, Old Friends and Chuckles

Well it all started when I read my friend Vee's post about being a copycat. Vee is the best writer and I always get a chuckle when she writes one of her funny posts. Vee's blog is called A Haven For Vee.

But seriously the photo of me that has been on my blog all these years is ancient. From 2004. She gave me the confidence to share what I look like now...two months shy of 63 years old. Yikes!

So, I set out to show me today, gray hair and all. I let my hair go natural, and my girls are always asking me to die it. But I have spent so much money dying my hair through the decades, I could own a beauty salon by now.

Besides, I like my gray hair, and the rest of it is turning a bit silver, I love that.

Several years ago I went to the salon and spent $120.00 to highlight my blonde, and lowlight the darks, and some other kind of light to make my hair look younger. And it did, except it didn't cover the gray at all. So then I had this young looking hair from the back, or when I looked down and held my head very still. But I had to avoid windy days, because then the contrast between the gray sides and the young hair was too stark. I looked like an old woman trying to look younger. Oooh Betty Davis Scary.

I told my hairdresser that I was going to let it grow out and back to my natural color. She said, in her young voice "Oh that will age you", I answered I am old, how much older can it make me look?

Well, I didn't want a photo like the ones you see on most of the blogs authored by gorgeous young girls. I wanted something that shows who I am without scaring people away.

So, my daughter Sarah had this idea. She really made me laugh, so my smile isn't one of those staged fake ones. It's how I look when I am laughing. I added it to my sidebar. Thank's Vee!!!

When you put on a happy face, the wrinkles disappear...it's better than Botox.

Scrapbook Inspiration

I thought I might write about some Scrapbook Inspiration today. A few years ago I fell madly in love with Webster Scrapbook papers.

I just love their designs, between the gorgeous graphic designs and that bit of Vintage embellishment. Brandine is co-owner of Webster Pages and has a blog dedicated to all kinds of Scrapbook Inspiration.

You might remember I wrote a post about a Scrapbook I was working on at Christmas.

Using Webster's beautiful scapbook paper, which matched my Santa designs perfectly.

Well, Webster Papers sends me their newsletter. The most recent newsletter was about their new books. When I went over to read more about it, I fell in love again.

I love their embellishments, and their papers are dreamy.

The postcards are so cute.

So, if you are like me and love to Scrapbook, stop by and see what lovely products they have. I buy mine at Ink About It in Westford, Massachusetts. I know that they have lots of stores who carry their line of products.
