Besides the lovely visit with my mom,
I look forward to the drive, through the mountains up North.
Exploring and getting lost in the beauty there.
The long ride home is made short...
when I plan my trip with a map of coffee stops.
and a meander down scenic country roads.
I always go to Stowe and visit the
Von Trapp Lodge. I love being on top of the mountain.
The gardens are spectacular, and now Trapp Family Lodge has a
new blog. This is
the family that The Sound of Music was created about.
Then after capturing some eye candy to take home,
A visit to the Austrian Tea House is in order,
to have a piece of the best apple strudel
with a great cup of coffee,
and sit outside to enjoy the view of the mountains.
Stopping by to say hello to the girls is always on my "to do" list before getting back on the highway.
There are so many lovely places along the way,
it's hard to choose where to visit.
One thing is for sure,
I find an escape and rest,
when I head up North.
The song for this post is the
Going North.
My oldest daughter watched this movie hundreds of time when she was little. I can almost recite the script from memory...and I love photographing reminders of the memories that live in my heart.
What memories does
The Sound of Music create for you today?
Here's the Trapp family Lodge recipe for Apfelstrudel
Apfelstrudel
Ingredients:
8 Sheets Philo Dough (4 for small version) ¼ Cup Sugar
¾ Cup melted Butter ½ teaspoon Cinnamon
½ Cup Bread Crumbs 1/8 teaspoon Nutmeg
2 Cups tart Apples, sliced Pinch of ginger
½ Cup Raisins 1 Egg, beaten
¼ Cup Almonds or Walnuts sliced Confectioners’ sugar
Preparation:
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease one cookie sheet.
2. Put three layers of philo dough on a damp towel. Sprinkle with some of the butter and then sprinkle ¼ of the breadcrumbs over all. Place 4th sheet of dough over and repeat with butter and crumbs to make a second layer. (Repeat for second strudel. If you are making the large version, overlap the 2 sections of the philo dough).
3. Spread with apples, raisins and almonds.
4. Mix sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger together. Pour over apples and raisins.
5. Roll up as you would a jellyroll, using the towel to guide you. Transfer to greased cookie sheet, seam down. (The towel works as a siding to transfer the roll).
6. Brush with beaten egg and the remaining butter.
7. Bake for 30 minutes. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar before serving.
Instead of apples you can use the following variations:
Rhubarb (Rhubarbstrudel), substitute 2 Cups Rhubarb, cut in ¼ inch pieces.
Cherry (Kirschenstrudel), one 16oz can, or fresh, pitted cherries. Omit raisins, almonds and cinnamon.
Wow, that looks like a beautiful trip! Lovely photos! Eye candy, indeed!
: )

Gorgeous post, Karen. Thanks for taking us along. Hope the visit with your Mom was as lovely as the drive!
Gorgeous photos. I've always wanted to go to the Von Trapp Lodge - it looks beautiful. I will definitely have some of that strudel when I go.
Oh it all looks so beautiful and Stowe hasn't changed too much, I see. Thanks for the link to the new blog; I will check it out. Oh, Karen, forget my question...I'm just now seeing your artwork in your sidebar. I feel so blessed!
What a wonderful trip!

Lucky you getting to drive through such a beautiful area to get from your place to your mother's. Glad you took the leisurely route home.... Pictures were gorgeous!

Oh, Karen! I hope you have had the most amazing visit with your sweet mother and through Vermont! How lovely!
I adore "The Sound of Music," and I always think of my husband's tiny pair of ledderhosen he got when he was a young boy. I was supposed to go to Austria once, but it didn't work out. Some day, I would love to visit there and to visit the Von Trapp Lodge in Vermont as well. My favorite carpenter was from Vermont, and he did amazing work.
XO,
Sheila :-)
P.S. Checking in from my break to say, "Hi" and I love my email from you! XOXOXO
Memories of singing along with the movie...and getting the songs stuck in my head even now! Those photos should be enlarged and hung on your wall! I love beautiful landscapes and would love to travel that road myself! ♥
Karen, this is a special place for me. Ruben took me there after my mom and dad both died of cancer back in 1987. They passed away in California, and after our obligations there, we returned to New England. It was summer time, so we had the time to do some traveling. Von Trapp lodge was our first destination...what an unforgettable place. Then off down south to Williamsburg, VA. Gentle memories for me here....Anita
I couldn't stop thinking about this post....so I mentioned your blog today! Hope you're having a wonderful day! ♥
Thank you, Karen,
That was a beautiful and peaceful trip you took us on!
The music was perfect and I am so glad you told us the name.

Hi Karen, I'm Becca-just started following. You have a lovely blog! Beautiful photographs. :-)
those are gorgeous photos and they make me a bit homesick! My husband is a Vermont fan and we used to go there a bit when we were dating. This makes me want to take my kids. And I've never been to the Von Trapp Lodge!!!
How absolutely beautiful! It looks so tranquil and serene!
One of my fave things to do is to come here. I have my coffee and now I get to "thumb" quietly through your journal and bliss out in all things Karen. Thanks for lifting my spirits every time. Beautiful visits and photos dear! Wow! Blessings and love, Amy
