The Taste of Love
Sunday, February 15, 2009
visited my mother for Valentine's Day and she looks great at 82 years young. On the ride home, I got to thinking about all the life lessons that I have learned from my mother. Either by word or deed, I always took note of her gentle ways.
When I was little my mother always wrapped fresh baked cookies in a napkin. She would place a few cookies on top of the napkin and then twist the top to seal the little package.
Whether I was going for a bicycle ride with Linda Isby and put the cookies in the basket of my sky blue two wheeler, or they were found packed inside my school lunch...I loved the way that napkin wrapping made my heart feel.
As a small child that napkin always made those cookies taste better. It made them taste like love. I followed by example and gave my girls cookies wrapped in a napkin and told them the story about how that napkin would make the cookies taste like love.
Love is like that, it makes us take that little bit of extra time to present something to look more special. Somehow we always know when that bit of special is in the recipe.
I think I'll keep this life lesson in my pocket today.
I hope that I can add that bit of special something, to make someone feel the love.
No matter who it was growing up, footprints of love gestures are written on our hearts, and make up the fabric of who we are today. Do you have a special memory of when someone did a gesture that made you feel the love?
The song for this post is La La Lu. If it sounds familiar, it's from my all time favorite, favorite Disney movie...Lady and the Tramp.
It really is the little extra special touches that we remember and that our chiuldren will remember too! What a sweet mermory and I hope your mother reads this and knows that her extra special toiches meant so much to you:>)
Well, first of all you totally made me think of my Gramma today - which is a very good thing! And Raggedy Ann is my all time favorite. So I sure hope that your Valentin'es Day was extra special. ~ Robyn
That is a sweet post. Happy Belated Valentines day. I feel a little something special whenever I visit your blog. You are a creative and lovely spirit and it shows through your blog posts. :)
That's a special song today and I was wondering why it was so familiar...
Your cookie memory is very pleasant and I'm sure that the taste of a cookie brings it all back.
Going to have to think about this question...not sure what brings back a memory that way.
Mothers are so precious. You are so lucky to have your Mum. I lost my Mum 16 years ago and it hurts today like it did then.

Karen,
What a sweet memory to share, and yes, those little gestures made us feel special. I try to always do those sorts of things with my girls. Even though they are "too old" for valentines, easter baskets and Halloween candy bags, I still make them, just a little more age appropriate. And they love that I still decorate Easter eggs and hang silly decorations for holidays year round just like when they were small (they roll their eyes but really do love it).
It is my hope they will do this with their children. We must always maintain a little bit of the child within us!!
Sorry for rambling on...I probably should have just made a post from this!! Your blog is inspiration Karen! :-)

My husband and I tell each other always when one has made something for the other: Mmmm I can taste you put some extra love in this or that. So your post does ring bells over here. Sadly my parents aren't with us anymore and like Alison Gibbs it still hurts me too. We used to share so many warm moments. With my kids I have the same. Both are cudly types and I can feel that same warmth and love, that feeling that you are very special for someone with them too. I have always thought that it was the most important thing to give your child; lots of love and the feeling that they are so special. No matter what. Thanks for a beautiful post that made me think of what a lucky girl I am. Hugs LiLi
Beautiful! Happy Valentine's Day (a bit late). Maybe we can celebrate Heart day everyday!

What a warm sttory you shared...and I know how very special your Mom is to you. Isn't it the small things that jog your memory? I rememeber once a month my Dad would stop before coming home from work and buy us coffee candy and leave it in our bedrooms to find after supper...OK, you've hit my tear duct now! What a lovely memory to share!
Hello Karen,
I am glad you had a great time with your mother. I was out of the city as well...
Love this post!

Oh, I loved your post today! It made me feel so "warm and fuzzy". Really, it took me back to so many things my parents did....little extra things that made life special. The song was perfect too.
I totally agree that it is so important to do those little extras for those we love.
Blessings,
Elaine
