My Dog Samantha and The Coyote

My Golden Retriever, Samantha was sitting on the deck around 5 o'clock PM tonight.  It was still light out, so I didn't worry.  Suddenly she bolted off the deck.  I quickly ran out because we have Coyotes in our area.  Sure enough she had challenged our electric fence and was deep into the woods chasing the Coyote.

My heart sank.  Because if there had been another one closely, they would have attacked Sam.  The Coyote was almost as large as Sam, and I knew that it might turn on her.  I screamed for Sam to stop before she went further into the woods.

Finally, she listened and let the Coyote run out of sight into the woods.  I called her back inside and gave her a hug.  I was so upset at the thought of what might have happened.  She is the sweetest dog.  I have never seen her run that far into the woods, nor chase an animal that large.  Thank God I didn't have my little Cocoa outside with her.

In recent years Coyotes have attacked dogs, cats and even some people.  Recently in Chicago a pack of Coyotes tried to break a door in chasing the family pet home.

P.S.  I hate Coyotes!

Today I am linking to Mosaic Monday over a Mary's Little Red House.

I don't blame you. They can be very dangerous. I feel similarly about the pit bulls across the street who are not kept chained and who can be very threatening. They give me the willies. (I have a file folder a mile high of pictures I've taken of them off their leash...for all the good it does.)

Sam was doing a good job of protecting you folks. That old coyote won't be back.

I'm so glad Samantha listened to you. There is no telling how many are in the area. We have them here, too. I feed ferals and every once in awhile I see tracks. It really upsets me to think of them coming around where the cats and other smaller wild-life are. Deb

Oh gosh, Karen. That was a close call. Glad your sweet dog is okay.

We had lots of coyotes when we lived in Arizona. I can still hear their mournful sound at night. Yuk!

Karen, I'm relieved to know that Samantha is safe. What a frightening experience. Samantha is a beautiful girl. She looks so comfortable in all that snow. '-)

What beautiful pictures, it looks like our area right now, full of snow.
And what a beautiful dog too.
We have coyotes, wolves, bears, you name it, we have it.
Happy Monday,
Cindy

When I lived in Los Angeles during our first five years of marriage (now 31 years ago, on March 6th!!!!), we lived up on a hill, overlooking the city. It was so gorgeous at night. But in the morning, while sitting at my breakfast table over looking the city, I would occasionally see a coyote in my front garden, taking all the romance out of the whole scenery! It was horrible. Oh, I am so glad Sam was smart enough to listen to you call, Karen! I cannot imagine the outcome if she would have penetrated those woods.

Keep safe, warm and bless you dear friend! Anita

PS...HOW IS THE NEEDLE FELTING GOING? What did you think about my idea for a little boy? Anita

What beautiful photos - so glad Samantha was good and came when called - totally frustrating when a dog gets a mission in their head and will not behave!
