The Ribbon Lady
Sunday, January 04, 2009
There are days when I wander back in time and I walk the familiar streets in Hong Kong and smile.
Vivid memories are like that, leading you to places that were special to you.
If I could visit a very special place today...
I would visit Hollywood Road. I would walk along the path to Ladder Street and Pottinger Street.
Up the stairs I would climb passed each little tiny storefront living on several steps.
I would walk up the steps until I came upon the wonderful "Ribbon Lady." I would take my time and memorize each ribbon and notion. I would touch the satin, organdy and fabric ribbons until I made my selection.
She would smile at me, as she would place each ribbon in a tiny plastic bag. She would be happy at my purchase, but happier still that I was on my way. So that she could resume eating her bowl of noodles with her chop sticks until the next shopper interrupted her lunch again.
As I recall, the days in Hong Kong were filled with exciting things to see, butterflies and flowers, unusual places to visit and romantic music playing in the background.
This tiny postcard size painting was created standing on a busy street called Stubbs Road. Looking down from a high hilltop you could see the buildings in the distance. I wanted to capture this building rooftop boasting a patio filled with plants and a gorgeous washline. A sight I passed every day when I went for my morning walk.
As I reflect, I can still feel the thrill within my soul at the memory of the sights I once was privileged to enjoy. The gardens in Hong Kong Park were so romantic. Brides posed next to small white bridges with the sounds of a waterfall cascading down.
Ponds were filled with large gold fish and the largest lily pods I have ever seen. Pairs of black swans floated nearby on a pond surrounded by beautiful foliage which hosted numerous butterflies. Such an amazing place.
The song for this post is Might've Been. Jacky Cheung was one of my favorite Canto Pop singers while I lived there. I often let his wonderful voice lead me back in time to a magical place.
My mother, Sarah and Ashley admiring the Dragon Boat races, as we toured the event in a sampan.
Memories from Hong Kong for our family still fill our hearts.
I hope that your day is filled with lovely memories from a special chapter of yours. Memories are filled with wisdom learned that spill into our todays.

Karen, This was an absolutely lovely post! I have a friend who, as a teenager, spent several years in Hong Kong with her family. She loved her time there and would often share her beautiful memories with me. I loved getting to see your charming photos and impressions of a place I have long admired. And as a bonus I am now remembering my special times with my friend Laura. Thank you.
