I'm Dream'n My Life Away on a Pink Saturday
Friday, April 30, 2010
Today is Pink Saturday and Bev from How Sweet The Sound is hosting. I was designing fabric for a fifties theme, when I thought...
why not design one for Pink Saturday too. If you click on the picture above, you can see how it would look in fabric.
"Gee Whiz", I grew up in the fifties, and I remember when the hoola hoop came on the scene in 1958.
Poodle skirts were "swell", and they were typically made out of heavy gray fabric, and we wore crinoline petticoats underneath to make them puffy. If you click on this image, you can see how it would look in fabric.
If you weren't "Square", bobby socks were worn with saddle shoes,
and we wore little baby scarfs around her neck to compliment our button down cardigan sweaters to look "keen". Here's cutie Mary Kate Olson doing a fun interpretation of the Bop, dancing at a sock hop in her poodle skirt, saddle shoes from back when. And then there was always the "Jive!"
When Spoonflower announced their upcoming fabric of the week contest for the Fifties...
I immediately went into dreamland remembering the crush I had on my favorite "Dreamboat" as I played the Everly Brothers, and I was back in time,
having hoola hoop contests with my friend Linda Isby, and going to a "Sock Hop" to practice the "stroll."
Spoonflower asked that we use a specific color pallette only consisting of red, pale green, blue, white and black. I'm not sure these colors do anything for my memories of the fifties, but then again it made the challenge even more fun. Here is the fabric design final which has been entered. If you click on the picture, you can see what it would look like in fabric.
My Dad was one of the cameramen on the Ed Sullivan Show when Elvis Presley performed on the show. He said that by the third time that Elvis came on the show, they were only allowed to film him from the waist up because Ed Sullivan thought his moves a bit too suggestive for that time!

What fun memories! I remember I had a wide white belt that had a loop on it and we tied one of those little scarves through it, very chic!! Some of the scarves had tiny pleats in them and I recall spending lots of time deciding which colors to buy. I had forgotten all about that. Thanks for the memories! I am in your part of the country right now, in Boston spending time with our youngest grandson.
Hugs, Rhondi
Love your post Karen! I love almost anything 50's. Maybe it was because I was born in '59 and our home was filled with everything 50's while I was growing up. It brings back such sweet memories.

Karen, this was so much fun!
I was six years old when hoola-hoops came out, and I loved them. We have 8mm movie films of me with my hoola-hoop. I remember whirling them around our necks, arms, legs and knees in addition to our waists.
It makes me laugh to think about doing it now. Every bone in my body would be creaking and aching.
OMG - did your father ever take you to work to see the performers?!
What a great post! Your blog is so cute..love it. I wasn't born til the 60s but always have loved the era. I certainly had a hula hoop though :-) Cute images! Thanks for joining me in Flashback Friday.
I had an outfit just like that and it was a PINK skirt! I used to wear it when I went roller skating! And I could whip that hula hoop around like nobody's business, but today I'd probably break a hip, LOL
Happy Pink Saturday!
Karen,
Remember it all very well. I was in Jr. High and just could not wait to grow up. As always a beautiful blog.

Fabulous! And the poodle is the perfect finishing touch. This design is definitely a winner - I like the silhouette image - a great modern twist on a vintage theme.

Hi Karen...Your 50's illustrations are right on target for this Girl Raised In Texas in the 1950's! Gosh, do you remember American Bandstand and all the great dance music? BTW, I was right there watching your Dad's TV camera shots of Elvis on our First Black and White TV. I've given you a ShoutOut on my blog, CollectInTexas Gal, this Pink Saturday...it's also a Thank-you for Info and a Pic from your LAST PS Post. Hope you'll come by for a visit....Sue

This is a beautiful retro fabric design, Karen!
I was born in the fifties and while I was too young for the poodle skirt I did have the hoola hoop and the roller skates that needed a key and I wanted to be a cowgirl like Dale Evans :-) Fabulous memories!
What a great job your dad had!
Did you Dad get Elvis' autograph?
♥ Pat
Your creations, pictures, words took me back to this time. My Grands love hula-hoops and jump ropes. I have them hanging in our garage for when they visit. Tomorrow is Allen's birthday he is sooo excited. have a great weekend my friend...smiles...m...
Sounds like we grew up the same time!
I like the story about your Dad being the camera man when Elvis appeared. I saw him once perform.
I love your fabric. You are one talented lady!

What a great Pink Saturday post,Karen! I remember all of the items you mentioned. . . in fact, just this week I bought TWO PINK hula hoops. One for my grand girl and one for ME! Neither of us are very good at keeping them up, but we're trying. Yes, I do recall the contests and being able to keep multiple hoops spinning! Those were the days. How awesome that your dad was a cameraman for the ES Show. He must've had plenty of great stories...and to think he saw Elvis' hips and couldn't picture them for us by his third appearance! :)
Hope all is well with you! dana
I used to hulla hoop all the time as a kid, back when I had a waist! and had too much time to waste! lol
gorgeous fabric pattern...love the images!
ciao bella
